Reverend Edward Wal, 64, a priest of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, died Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Northside Hospital. Born in Zagorzany, Poland, Father Wal most recently served at Pastor of Transfiguration Catholic Church in St. Petersburg until July of 2018.
Father Wal was born to Stanislaw and Stanislawa (Wantuch) Wal in Zagorzany, Poland. In addition to his native Polish, he became fluent in both English and Spanish. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 24, 1979 for the Diocese of Tarnow, Poland. Following ordination, Father Wal assisted as Parochial Vicar of several parishes throughout his home diocese until 1991 when his bishop released him to perform missionary work in Peru, where he served as Pastor of three parishes in the Diocese of Huancavelica.
In 1997, Father Wal came to the Diocese of St. Petersburg. The following year he was appointed as Parochial Vicar of St. Cecilia Parish, Clearwater, where he served until 2006. He was incardinated into the Diocese of St. Petersburg on June 1, 2000. Father Wal was subsequently appointed as Parochial Vicar of St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Parish, Spring Hill, where he served from 2006 to 2011. In 2011, Bishop Robert Lynch appointed Father Wal as pastor of Transfiguration Parish, where he faithfully ministered to both English and Spanish speaking members of the community until this past July.
Father wall is survived by his mother, Stanislawa and his sister, Jolanta Gogola.
Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Wednesday, October 24th at Transfiguration Church with a wake service at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 AM Thursday, October 25th at Transfiguration Church with Bishop Gregory Parkes as main celebrant. Burial will be in Poland.
