Two and a half years of Caregiving. Challenging to say the least but I kept reminding myself of all my Mom did for us. It was truly a team effort with my two sisters who would come from the West Coast for relief. Jeanne came every two months and Patty was best on the phone with her conversations. We had great caregivers, especially our latest, Jane.
But without Lucy, my wife, it was not going to work. She had a special relationship and kept Mom busy with shopping, hair cuts, lunches and watching Mom’s favorite movies. When Mom had her Sundowners, Lucy was the target. It wasn’t fair but this loving relationship would fall apart for about an hour or so. The blessing was that Mom would forget and Lucy grew to have more patience and love. She would call her Grossmutter (German) for Grandmother. Thank you my love.
Dementia took my Mom back to a child’s mind. She was very amusing, quite funny and then the stories of the past came up. Several memories of her early years on the plantation in Kenya and the six long years in a prison camp on the island of Mauritius during WWII were spoken of often. After the war her family lost their plantation and returned to Germany’s devastation penniless. From riches to rags to meeting her Bobbie in the Harz Mountains of Germany. The love affair would take them to a new life to St Albans, Vermont. Yet another adventure as she boarded the ship alone to the United States. The remainder of her life was normal like most. She became the best Mother a son and two daughters could possibly have.
