THOMAS C. HENNESSEY,
Thomas Crompton Hennessey, M.D., passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 22, 2017. Born August 21, 1932 in Glen Rock, New Jersey to John Henry Hennessey and Gladys Bigbee Hennessey, he was raised in a busy home with four siblings. After graduation from Ridgewood High School, Tom attended college at Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, then subsequently went on to receive the degree of Doctor of Medicine from New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY in 1958.
Following graduation from medical school, Dr. Hennessey completed his Internship at Mound Park Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL, followed by an Assistant Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Metropolitan Hospital in NYC, and then back to Mound Park Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL where he completed his Residency. He was certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1966 and elected a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 1973. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Hennessey joined a private OB/GYN practice with Dr. John Campbell in Ridgewood, NJ before returning for good to St. Petersburg in 1968.
Shortly thereafter, he met and married his true love, Donna Kunish Hennessey and began a private OB/GYN practice with Dr. Jim Bledsoe that lasted over 40 years. After retiring from obstetrics, Dr. Hennessey continued practicing gynecology with his good friends and colleagues Dr. David Desper and Dr. Gilbert Shamus. In 1996, Dr. Hennessey was awarded the A. J. Gorday Award for Doctor of the Year at Bayfront Medical Center where he performed the majority of his deliveries and was at one time the OB/GYN Department Chair. Dr. Hennessey finally decided to hang up his stethoscope and retire after delivering more than 40,000 babies. When asked what he missed most about his career he answered unequivocally “his patients”.
When he wasn’t delivering babies, Tom was busy becoming a Master Bridge player and a fierce ping pong competitor. He and his wife, Donna, spent many hours at the bridge table enjoying time with their long time close friends Bob and Susan Charnock. They also enjoyed over 30 wonderful years of Thanksgiving dinners with Joyce and Harold Seder. Dr. Tom Hennessey had one of the kindest hearts you will ever find. He never uttered an unkind word about anyone and truly loved his family and work. He was fully devoted to both his entire life. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 46 years, Donna Kunish Hennessey in 2015.
He is survived by his three daughters: Sheryl Lynn Hennessey of St. Petersburg, FL, Jill Hennessey Holder (John) of Atlanta, GA, and Karin Hennessey Pahlke of Louisville, KY; and his grandchildren Hailey Christine Hennessey, Laura Holder Menkes, Robert John Holder, Alexandra Jane Pahlke, and Jonathan Dean Pahlke; as well as many other relatives and dear friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Brett Funeral Home, 4810 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg, FL 33711 Saturday, September 30, at 10:00am.
