Obituary

Ronald, F. Holehouse, of St. Pete Beach, transitioned to heaven Dec. 20, 2018. He was 68.

He was born in Buffalo, NY, to the late Robert and Anita Holehouse. He graduated from Eden High School in 1968. The family moved to St. Petersburg in 1969, and he went on to become a self-made success story and founded Holehouse Insurance, one of the largest family-owned insurance agencies in St. Petersburg. It was consistently ranked one of the top in Florida and Ron won numerous awards for the success of the agency. He also owned a number of real estate properties in Pinellas County including the award-winning Inn on the Beach, a once dilapidated property he turned into a charming inn that he operated for 24 years before selling in 2014. The well-recognized pink, horseshoe-shaped inn was favorably reviewed by USA Today, the Boston Globe and travel magazines. He modestly credited Pass-a-Grille's charm for the inn’s national reputation. He also redeveloped several properties near downtown St. Petersburg and on Eighth Avenue in Pass-a-Grille, the commercial "main street" of St. Pete Beach's southern tip.

He has one son, Jacob W. Holehouse, who took after his father and they owned HH Insurance in St. Petersburg together, which Jacob still owns. Ronald was the fifth of 10 Holehouse children, a close-knit clan known for its loud, riotous gatherings full of laughter.

He is survived by his siblings, Brien Holehouse of Sarasota; Mary Ellen Brennan of Naples; Elaine Ferguson of Naples; Paul Holehouse of Hollywood, Calif.; John Holehouse of Santa Barbara; Patricia Miller of Boulder, Col; James Holehouse of Morgantown, WV; Joseph Holehouse of Baltimore, MD; Thomas Holehouse of Santa Barbara and dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins who all regarded Ron as their hilarious favorite role model, with an infectious laugh who was quick to tease but just as quick to help anyone in need.

Ron was a humble person who had incredible compassion for helping others and serving the community. He was a civic-minded leader who contributed his time to many organizations throughout his life. He served on St. Pete Beach's Planning Board, its Board of Adjustment, Development Review Board and a City Hall Advisory Committee that oversaw the development of a new City Hall in 2000. He also was a knowledgeable adviser to legislators on flood insurance legislation and provided information for the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012. He was a frequent volunteer and most recently served on the board of directors and then President of the Downtown St. Petersburg Kiwanis.

He was a member of the St. Petersburg Quarterbacks Club, Squires Club and multiple other civic and social organizations.

Ron was an accomplished developer of run-down properties, and was passionate about the importance of top-quality work, which he said made Pass-a-Grille unique, and he insisted on it in all his projects. His former home which he acquired in 1996 after the city had condemned it for demolition was later turned into a showplace winning multiple awards from local and national publications.

Ron was incredibly loved by his family and the community. A service in his memory will be held at First Unity Church located at 460 46th Ave N, St. Petersburg, FL 33703 on Jan. 11, 2019 at 2 p.m.
