Obituary

Kos, McKenya D. of St. Petersburg Beach passed away on February 6, 2018. A lady until the end, McKenya completed her final journey the way she lived her life: in her own time, on her own terms, and with integrity, dignity and grace.
Born on June 22, 1954 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, McKenya moved to Sunset Beach in the late 1970’s. She loved her little beach apartment, her privacy, her art, and above all, her family. Mckenya was extremely knowledgeable and would strike up a conversation with anyone that she considered a nice person. She was always willing to extend her friendship and a helping hand. Unafraid to speak her mind, McKenya was passionate, gifted and creative. An artist all her life, each of McKenya’s projects was truly a labor of love.
McKenya met Chuck Jablon, a local builder and St. Petersburg native, in the early 1980’s. From the day she met him, she told everyone that butterflies were everywhere within her and she couldn’t wait to see him and be with him every day. She said that she never wanted those butterflies to fly away, and they didn’t. For the rest of her life, McKenya supported Chuck, admired him and shared in all of the buildings that were so important to him. McKenya cherished the stories Chuck would share of the buildings he was building, and in this sharing, she became part of the buildings he was bringing to life. Chuck and McKenya inspired each other creatively and found great joy in knowing the other was doing work that made them happy: she with her art and he with his buildings.
Those who were fortunate to have experienced McKenya’s love are better because of her. Chuck was so proud of her in life and even more proud of her courage in death. She is survived by her best friend and partner of 36 years, Chuck Jablon; her brother Herme Kos; sister Tammy Hockenberry; and two nieces she treasured and loved dearly, Taryn and Devin.
Mckenya’s contributions during her time on earth were many, but her most important contribution in life was her unconditional love. What an honor it has been to know her and be a part of her journey!
